Association and SJ Branch assist Lorne Middle School

Published April 22, 2011 - Telegraph Journal

SAINT JOHN - Children at Lorne Middle School are learning to build the same kinds of robots used to remove roadside bombs in Afghanistan.

Lorne Middle School student Jordan Gabriel works on his robot in a special robotics program that gives students exposure to science and engineering.

Twelve pupils are enrolled in the Robo Science Enrichment Program - an after-school club that would normally cost the kids up to $300 each.

But, thanks to close to $3,000 in donations from two area professional groups, the old north end children are taking the course for free.

"They're increasing their scientific intelligence," said principal Greg Norton, who saw the value in the program, but wanted to make it accessible for his students.

"After all the kids go home, we've still got kids that are doing this," he said Thursday as a group of students operated robots through an obstacle course in the school science lab.

"They're engaged with their work. They have fun."

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick donated more than $2,300 to the program, while the local Saint John branch added another $400. It means the students can take the course for free. They also get to keep the robot kits, which they can use to built multiple models.

Norton has noticed a difference in pupils such as Kyle Clarke, who might normally keep to himself.

"For the kids who are not athletic or artsy, they've found something they really gravitate towards, which is robots," Norton said.

Kyle, 13, said he enjoys the robo science course because it's fun and inventive. He said it's made him start thinking about engineering as a possible career.

"It's something I want to do," he said, demonstrating his latest robotic creation, which could pick up a tennis ball from a wireless remote.

"It kind of helps that you get out of class early."

The kids miss 30 minutes of class every Thursday, and continue the course until 4:30 p.m. But the enrichment makes up for it, Norton said.

Andrew Jang, of Robo North America, travels to many schools in the Saint John area, teaching children who have to pay for the program.

He credits Norton for making the 21st century technology available to children who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

"They're young robot scientists," he said proudly, gesturing to the children hunched over the robots, made from tiny components, wires and computer motherboards.

He said the same technology is used in robots in Afghanistan, only on a bigger scale.

They're also used at the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear plant to measure radiation levels.

Not only do the kids learn electrical, mechanical, structural and computer engineering skills, but they learn to work together.

Students such as Jordan Gabriel understand the extra education could lead to more opportunities.

"This could help me get into college," the 12-year-old said. "I'm learning how to make different robots and different functions, and a lot of problem solving."

on 13-11-2008

Attention all Members:

You are invited to attend the APEGNB Saint John Branch's first brown bag luncheon seminar at UNBSJ. Please join us in a special presentation about the renowned Water for People Organization.

Water For People helps people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs. Around the world, 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.5 billion are without adequate sanitation facilities. Every day, nearly 6,000 people who share our planet die from water-related illnesses, and the vast majority are children. Water for People’s vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease

Water For People - Bolivia has supported a total of 176 projects from 1997 through 2006, benefiting more than 42,000 people. Water development technologies used in Bolivia include gravity-fed water systems, protected springs, storage tanks, pumped water systems, and locally manufactured household hand pumps. Sanitation projects typically involve the construction of dry-composting latrines, pour-flush and/or conventional flush toilets, and household bathrooms, including some with showers.

In September 2008, 3 local engineers (and Saint John Branch Members), joined an extraordinary special country tour of Bolivia with Water For People to travel off the beaten path for a first-hand look at the work that Water For People supports. Participants were able to see first-hand sustainable water and sanitation development in progress and the vast difference it is making in people’s lives.

Please join Branch Member Peter Hanlon, P. Eng. for a visual tour of his experience in Bolivia and see how Water For People helps communities in need.

Thursday, November 20, 2008 (12:30-1:30pm), Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre, UNBSJ Campus.

Gardner Creek Fossil Tour

on 12-05-2008

APEGNB Gardner Creek Field Trip

Did you know that there are rare fossils located close to Saint John? Come join us on a field trip to explore this site with our experienced guide on Sunday May 25th 2008. This event is a great opportunity for all ages to see everything from rare trackways from giant animals to fossils of standing trees.

This important fossil and geological site is situated on the Bay of Fundy coast, east of Saint John on the coastal highway toward St. Martins. The rocky outcrops along the shoreline expose a geological record of the late Pennsylvanian Period, where the rocks are about 314 million years old.

We will look at the rocks, try to figure out how geologists determined the age and environment of the rocks, and look for some of the fossil evidence. The fossil record from this site includes multiple rare trackways belonging to giant centipede-like animals known as Arthropleura. Plant fossils include a few rare occurrences standing trees including giant horsetails (Calamites) and early conifer trees (Dadoxylon).

If the adventurer, geologist, or archeologist in you is interested, please contact Lisa Frazee ( 633-3738) ASAP, as space is limited. The cost of attending this event is only $5 per person, which includes transport via a bus from Saint John, lunch, and a beverage. The schedule for this event is as follows:

  • Arrive at the site approximately 10:45 am
  • Walk along the coast from 10:45 am – 12 pm (we will walk along the gravel beach at low tide for about half a kilometer)
  • Take a short break (a light lunch and a beverage will be provided)
  • Look at finds on the other side of the creek from 12:15 pm – 12:45 pm
  • Depart about 1 pm
  • Arrive back in Saint John about 1:45 pm
