Create an epic marble run for a chance to win a grand prize from Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick!
What is a marble run?
A marble run is a creatively designed track for a marble to race down. Often marble runs are designed with special obstacles for each marble to get through. You can watch a video of an extra-special marble run here: youtube.com/watch?v=jmh_usvhHLw
How to participate:
Build your own marble run with materials that you can find around your house! Design creative obstacles for the marbles and use your problem-solving skills to create simple machines like inclined planes, levers, and pulleys. Create a video of your marble run and submit it to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: Marble Run by October 30th, 2020 at 11:59PM. This contest is open to all New Brunswick Students in grades 6-12.
Your marble must go through the course for a minimum of 60 seconds. Experiment with different designs to see how you can get the marble to roll longer.
For Grades 6-8, you must use at least 3 out of 6 simple machines. For Grades 9-12, you must use at least 5 out of 6.

- Wheel & Axle

How does this relate to engineering and geoscience?
The way that your marble rolls through the run is impacted by forces, such as gravity and friction. The marble has potential energy as it starts the run, that it translates to kinetic energy as it rolls. As the designer of this project you have many variables that you can control (weight of your marble, friction of the surfaces, angle of the slope, height of the run), and you have to make your project fit within the constraints, just like a professional engineer or geoscientist. Every day they use creative problem-solving skills and logic to design projects and systems that impact almost everything we do on a daily basis, from the roads we drive on, to the toothpaste we use in the morning.
